Short and informal
Ruth is a London-born (legit Cockney), White, Gen X, cis woman and feminist. Artist, researcher, organiser and creative collaborative pack-animal. Recently moved from London to rural East England’s coast. Recovering web utopian, rooting locally for multi-species neighbours, while staying networked globally, and reckoning with ancestral ghosts.
Long and formal
Ruth is a recovering Web-utopian. A UK-based artist, researcher, curator, and organiser of emancipatory network cultures and co-founder/director, of Furtherfield for art technology and eco-social change established with Marc Garrett in 1996. She is also co-Principal Investigator at the Serpentine Galleries’ Blockchain Lab. She specialises in LAARRP (Live Art Action Research Role Play) for playful co-creation and critical group-driven discovery that embraces more-than-human interests for fairer and more connected cultural ecologies and economies. Projects include: Live Action Role-Plays (LARPs) for planetary-scale interspecies justice; the CultureStake decentralised app for collective cultural decision-making; books such as Radical Friends – Decentralised Autonomous Organisations and the Arts (2022) and Artists Re:thinking the Blockchain (2017). Furtherfield organises for inclusivity and equity in art and technology, and advocating for their use in imagining and building real social change and positive environmental impact. For nearly 30 years, through nearly 70 exhibitions, and over 125 national/international partnerships, Furtherfield has developed alternative systems of co-creation and co-organisation across digital and physical networks. Recognised as a pioneer of critical media arts in the UK our work is featured in Art Newspaper, BBC, the Financial Times, the Guardian, Hyperallergic, the New Scientist, New York Times, and Wired, as well as in 100s of academic articles and books. Ruth has been interviewed for the Art Newspaper, Flash Art, New York Times, and invited to give keynotes and participate in panel discussions at the Venice Biennale, Art Basel and Documenta.
