An immersive live action role-play (LARP) inviting Middlesbrough residents to explore the future of their town.

In September and October 2025, I collaborated with artist Cecilia Wee and a network of Middlesbrough artists, residents, community organisers, and civic collaborators to develop and present Becoming ‘Boro – a place-based, research-centred LARP that was the first event of its type in Teesside.

Presented at Middlesbrough Art Week 2025 and supported by Borderlands, the project invited participants to step into a future Middlesbrough and imagine how the town’s identity could transform in years to come. Grounded in local history, present tensions, and eco-social possibilities, the game-like experience guided players through explorations of the town’s industrial legacy, changing environment, and political and social transformation.

Two sets of ‘power objects’ enabled players to time-travel together, exploring ideas, discovering fresh perspectives, and rehearsing meaningful change. The sessions were free and open to all, with no experience required – just curiosity and a willingness to play.

Publicly bookable sessions took place at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Thursday 2nd October (9.30–11.30am) and Saturday 4th October (1.30–3.30pm), with an additional session on Friday 26th September (3–5pm) at a venue to be confirmed.
